How can occupational therapy help your child? Occupational Therapy can help your child develop better body and safety awareness, improve postural control and increase coordination between the eyes, head, mouth, hands and body. It’s said that play is a child’s work. We help children fulfill their roles or “occupations” as players, as family members and as students. We help children tolerate and integrate sensory input through playful sensory therapy activities so they can better participate in community environments. And we help families on their journey to discover the wonder of their child’s unique gifts and strengths. Details on some of our programs include:
Occupational Therapy - Our Occupational Therapists have experience providing assessment and treatment of a child’s sensory processing, movement patterns, gross and fine motor skills, visual perception and everyday functional self-care skills. Individual goals are developed based on the child’s needs and the parent’s priorities.
Speech/Language Therapy - Our Speech Therapists have experience providing assessment and treatment of pre-speech development, sound production, expressive language, receptive language and augmentative communication. Home programs are provided so parents can continue to work on a child’s communication needs in the intervals between therapy sessions.
Feeding/Oral-Motor Therapy - Our feeding specialists, either a Speech or Occupational Therapist, have experience identifying children with oral-motor difficulties. This can include difficulties with sucking, chewing, swallowing and tolerating different textures/temperatures of a variety of foods. If a child has oral sensory therapy needs, the therapist will work closely with a child’s family to help insure adequate nutritional intake and hydration as well as to decrease food aversions.
Therapeutic Listening Programs - Therapeutic Listening is a structured program using a series of modulated CD’s directed by a therapist with specialty certification. The program can be used at home, in school or as part of a sensory therapy treatment session. Potential benefits are numerous and depend on the individual. Improvements may be seen in increased language, improved sensory processing, increased vestibular function and better emotional stability and self-regulation.
